Frequently Asked Questions
- What's the diffence between the Kairos Course and Perspectives?
Kairos (not the prison ministry) is a 9 week course that is part of the Perspectives family. It has been described as the tradesman's course compared to the professional course. Or alternatively as the entree compared to Perspectives being the main course. The Perspectives Courses go into the material in a lot more detail. Karios was originally developed in the Philipines using the Perspectives material to make the course more manageable to a less literate society. If you have problems studying, then Kairos might be the course for you. Both courses operate in a group context with small group discussions, readings and videos.
- Is there a graduation?
- Most course have a dinner to end the course where certificates are given out. Many coordinators will visit your church and present your certificate during your church service. This helps your church to understand the journey you've been on, and for them to find out about the next course and come themselves.
- Do I have to do the homework/assignment?
There is an attendance certificate, however you will not gain as much as if you do the homework. The homework, while not insignificant (3 hours or so a week) is fairly straight forward, basically being reading and comprehension, plus a changce for you to process what God is saying to you. This last part is the most important. Yes, there is an assignment. Don't panic, it isn't hard, but will require some work and planning. Get in early and don't leave it till the last minute. And yes, the course coordinators do check your work - to encourage you and to see if you are getting the concepts of the course rather than to mark you. The only way that I've seen anyone fail is to not finish the course!
- I'm married/engaged. Should I do the course without my spouse?
This course will change your life, so you won't be the same person after you have finished. It therefore would be a good idea for your spouse (or future spouse) to undergo the same changes. (Plus you can share notes!). If you have children talk to your Perspectives coordinator about helping to organise childcare. Or sign up with another couple - you fo this course and they can do the next, and watch each other's kids. Or host the course at your house. Worst case - one of you do the next course.
- I don't want my life to change. Should I take the course?
Absolutely not. This course will change your life. On the other hadn - that is what God wants isn't it?
- I am enrolled in a Bible College. Can I gain study credits if I take the course.
- Probably not. While the course is used by colleges, they often have additional requirements. However, talk to your college and your Pespectives Coordinator to check for certain.
- I'm a student. Should I take the course?
- Probably not. The course is the equivanet workload of a standard university or college course, so you will be adding a unit to your study load.
- Can I do the Advanced Perspectives Course without doing the Standard Perspectives Course?
- No. The advanced course builds on the Perspectives course.
- How much does the course cost?
Course costs vary slightly but are approximately Perspectives: $130 + Reader (about $60) Advanced Perspectives: $130.
- How do I run a Perspectives Course?
Each course needs to be run by a trained coordinator. A coordinator needs to have completed Perspectives, Advanced Perspectives and the Coordinators course (which takes one day). Generally coordinators work in teams to run courses. All coordinators are members of the Perspectives Association, which, among other things, gives them insurance coverage. If you are interested in running a course locally, then find your closest Perspectives course and take the course. Let the coordinator know that you are interested in running courses yourself.
